First Real Incentive - Courtesy of The Kathmandu Post -
1 May 1995
A group of 90 French media tycoons were treated to an uniquely different
touristic experience late last week After being greeted at Tribhuvan
International Airport by a panoply of musicians, dancers and singers
they were transported to their hotel, where they were allowed to rest
before the most spectacular, non-stop extravaganza of Nepal.
Highlights for this group who are associated
with TFI - a opinion making French Television network, included a day
when they breakfasted at 16,000 feet below the towering heights of Gosaithan
peak, had lunch that very day on the Trishuli and dined that same evening
at Chitwan.
This Yeti to Tiger via Fish programme,
the first ever of its kind in Nepali tourism, was designed by Utpal
Sengupta who also concocted other delights such as son-et-lumiere at
Bhaktapur and a spiritually rejuvenating dinner in a monastery that
was totally renovated and redecorated for the occasion. "I am excited
to change the normal two and a half day programmes that are typical
for this country's tourism. This new programme is innovative and may
lead the future for growth of our industry in our beautiful country."
said Sengupta.
Members of the TF1 group trekked through
the countryside around the Valley of Kathmandu, worshipped at Boudhanath,
where they were blessed by a reincarnate Lama, listened to Mozart on
a beach, watched masked dances by the light of 2000 flickering butter
lamps, listened to the music performed by members of the Royal Nepal
Academy and even attempted to learn the traditional stick dancing, beloved
of the Prajapati sect of the Newar community. Also on the menu of this
magical mystery tour, was dinner in a restored Newari house and a sari-tying
competition for the ladies.
The group comprised top echelon management
from Fortune 500 companies such as - Renault, Aerospace, Nintendo, Coca-Cola,
Toyota and Reebok amongst a host of others.
Overwhelmed by Nepalese hospitality, the
elegant Madame Ariele Renouf generously offered education sponsorship
for needy children and hinted at a possible documentary programme for
airing in France promoting Nepal as a destination. Madame Renouf, a
noted philanthropist and oriental philosopher, showed both the Buddhist
and the Hindu side of Nepal to her group of TF1 supporters.
Over 300 people ranging from monks and
artistes, to caterers and hoteliers helped in making a French dream
of Nepal come true.
