Higlights

A unique attribute of this mid-hill region is that you will a vast ethnic diversity. Your trip highlight will include the majestic panorama of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Manaslu (all over 8000m). Overnight stops are in comfortable Mountain Lodges & Resorts, which can be reached at your own moderate walking pace. You arrive at largest village of this mid-hill region at Ghandruk. This area is home to the Gurung people, traditional members of the British Gorkha Army, who as descendants of Tibet, practice their own form of Buddhism. This wonderful walk ends in Pokhara.

You may consider continuing the trip for the next soft adventure, which could include a day of scenic float, rafting on the Trishuli River, and ending with two days of Wildlife Safari at the Royal Chitwan National Park. Unquestionably, a great combination to experience the diversity that the people and culture of Nepal has to offer.

Day 01 Trek Pokhara – Birethati
After breakfast, we transfer by road with guide & porters to our trek start point. This takes 1 hour. Our walk will follow a ridgeline in the lower foothills of the Annnapurnas, with surrounding views of the Pokhara Valley. This route then drops to the Modi River Valley, where Ker & Downey's Sanctuary Lodge is located. The Lodge has magnificent views of the sacred and unclimbed Fishtail Mountain, or Machhapuchare, as it is locally known. Lunch is at the Lodge, with the afternoon free to explore the surrounding river valley. The total trek takes 3 hours. We have lunch, dinner and an overnight stay at the Sanctuary Lodge.

Day 02 Trek Birethati – Ghandruk
After breakfast, we leave the lodge, walking out through the outlying farms following the Modi River Valley. Soon, we begin to climb out of the valley and up, towards the mountains. Lunch is a picnic en route with spectacular views of the surrounding valleys. The trail passes through small hamlets, terraced rice fields, and forests. We arrive in the afternoon at Ker & Downey's Himalayan Lodge in Ghandruk; the trek takes 5 hours. From this lodge, magnificent close up views of the surrounding mountains can be seen. We have dinner and an overnight stay at the Sanctuary Lodge.

Day 03 Ghandruk
We walk up this morning. Tea and coffee are served in the garden and we watch the sunrise over Annapurna South, Annapurna 1, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, and the Fishtail. After enjoying a relaxing breakfast and the glorious views from the Himalayan Lodge, our guide will take us on an exploration of this mountain village and the surrounding countryside. Ghandruk is not only a major recruitment centre for the famous Gurkha soldiers but is also the hub of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP). ACAP promotes many varied ecological projects. The ACAP headquatwers is well worth a visit. The women of Ghandruk maintain a loval industry of weaving traditional Nepalese rugs. We remain for lunch, dinner and an overnight stay at Himalayan Lodge.

Day 04 Ghandruk – Gurung Lodge
After breakfast, we have the Himalayan Lodge, walking out through the village of Ghandruk. We trek on the traditional route to the Annapurna base camp, so we may well pass expenditions on their way to the mountains. As we walk downwards, we pass groups of smilling children and a constant stream of villages, carrying everything from firewood to soft drink bottles in traditional back baskets. Buffaloes and goats graze in the surrounding fields and you many have to make way for the donkey and mule trains that convey goods to and from the Gurkha settlements. You may also meet some of the trekkers coming down from or heading up to the Sanctuary itself. We continue descending until after about 2 or 3 hours, we reach Shauli Bazaar. From here, we follow along the Modi River until reaching the cable bridge we negotiated on our first day. The field just under the bridge is an ideal spot for a picnic lunch alongside the rushing river that pours down the hillside. Then, we ascend again, partly on well-paved steps and partly on switch backs, reaching the welcome sign of the Gurung Lodge after about 2 hours. The total trek takes about 5 hours. We stay for dinner and spend the night at the Gurung Lodge.

Day 05 Gurung Lodge – Dhampus
Today, we trek to the Basanta Lodge in Dhampus, Our walk takes us through sub-tropical forests that include tree orchilds, rhododendrons and magnolias. We also pass through the village of Potana, where many Tibetan traders live and sell their souvenirs. We arrive in Basanta Lodge for lunch, after about a four hour trek. The afternoon is free to explore the surrounding areas. From the Lodge, there are sweeping views of the entire Annapurna Range. We have lunch and dinner here and spend the night.

Day 06 Return to Pokhara
After breakfast, we depart along the ridge and descend through the wooded hillside and terraced formland to the valley floor, the trek taking  about 1½ hours and transfer to Pokhara by vehicle.
